Climber Preparation SOP
This Standard Operating Procedure establishes the required steps before any climber leaves the ground. Preparation prevents emergencies.
1. Job & Tree Assessment
- Confirm work scope and objectives
- Identify tree species and structural condition
- Assess decay, cracks, deadwood, and hangers
- Identify utilities, targets, and exclusion zones
- Confirm weather conditions are acceptable
2. Climber Personal Readiness
- Proper PPE worn and inspected
- Hydrated, rested, and physically ready
- No impairment from illness, fatigue, or substances
- Mental readiness confirmed
3. Gear Inspection & Setup
- Harness, bridge, and attachments inspected
- Climbing line inspected and correctly installed
- Secondary system (lanyard) functional
- Connectors locked and oriented correctly
- Friction devices functioning properly
4. Tool Preparation
- Saws inspected, fueled, and sharp
- Chains properly tensioned
- Tool lanyards installed
- Handsaws secured
- First cut plan confirmed
5. Communication & Ground Coordination
- Primary and backup ground contact identified
- Verbal commands reviewed
- Hand signals reviewed if needed
- Emergency response plan reviewed
- Drop zones clearly established
6. Final Go / No-Go Check
- All crew clear and attentive
- Ropes routed cleanly and protected
- No unresolved hazards
- Climber verbally confirms readiness
- Ground lead acknowledges
